SETTER IRLANDESE

BREVE CENNO STORICO: il Setter irlandese fu allevato in Irlanda come cane da lavoro per la caccia. La razza proviene dal Setter irlandese rosso-bianco e da un cane sconosciuto dal mantello monocolore. Il tipo venne fissato nel 18° secolo. Nel 1882 fu fondato, per promuovere la razza, il Club “Irish Setter” che nel 1886 pubblicò lo Standard e organizzò prove di lavoro ed esposizioni per applicare lo Standard di razza fin d’allora. Nel 1998 il Club pubblicò anche lo Standard di lavoro. I due Standard insieme danno una descrizione dell’aspetto fisico e dell’abilità nel lavoro della razza.

Il Setter irlandese, evolvendosi lungo il corso degli anni, è diventato un cane forte, sano e intelligente, dotato di eccellente abilità venatoria e grande resistenza.

 

ASPETTO GENERALEDistinto e  Racy (costruito per correre veloce), atletico, pieno di qualità, dall’espressione amichevole. Armonico nelle proporzioni.

 

COMPORTAMENTO – CARATTERE: Acuto, intelligente, energico, affezionato e leale.


TESTA: Lunga e asciutta, non troppo pesante agli orecchi. Muso e cranio di

uguale lunghezza e su linee parallele.

 

REGIONE DEL CRANIO

Cranio:  ovale (da orecchio a orecchio), con gran ampio spazio per il cervello, e con protuberanza occipitale ben marcata. Arcate sopraccigliari marcate.

Stop:  ben definito.

 

REGIONE FACCIALE

Tartufo:  il colore è mogano scuro, noce scuro o nero. Narici ampie.

Muso:  moderatamente profondo e piuttosto quadrato all’estremità. Dallo stop alla punta del tartufo, lungo, con labbra non pendule.

Mascelle:  di lunghezza quasi uguale

Denti:  chiusura a forbice

Occhi:  nocciola scuro o marrone scuro; non dovrebbero essere troppo grandi

Orecchi: di media misura, di tessitura fine, attaccate basse e bene indietro, pendenti in una piega netta aderenti alla testa

 

COLLO:  moderatamente lungo, molto muscoloso, non troppo spesso, leggermente arcuato, senza rilassamenti alla gola

 

CORPO:  proporzionato alla taglia del cane

Torace: profondo, piuttosto stretto davanti, con costole ben cerchiate per lasciare molto spazio ai polmoni

Rene:  muscoloso e leggermente arcuato

 

CODA: di media lunghezza, proporzionata alla taglia del corpo, attaccata piuttosto bassa, forte alla radice, si assottiglia in una punta fine. Portata a livello della linea dorsale o più bassa.

 

ARTI

ANTERIORI:

Spalle: sottili in punta, profonde e ben inclinate dietro.

Gomiti: liberi e ben abbassati, non rigirati in dentro né in fuori

Avambraccio: diritto e con tendini evidenti, con buona ossatura.

 

POSTERIORI: ampi e potenti

Gambe: lunghe e muscolose dalle anche al garretto; dal garretto ai talloni corte e forti

Ginocchio: ben angolato

Garretti: non deviati  in dentro né in fuori

 

PIEDI: piccoli, molto fermi solidi, con dita forti, arcuate e ben chiuse

 

ANDATURA/MOVIMENTO: movimento sciolto, possente potente. Testa tenuta alta. Anteriori con buon allungo, ma tenuti bassi. Posteriore con movimento fluido, con grande spinta potenza. Inaccettabili gli arti che s’incrociano.

 

MANTELLO

PELO: sulla testa, parte anteriore degli arti, e punte degli orecchi, corto e fine; sulle altre parti del corpo e degli arti, di moderata lunghezza, piatto e possibilmente privo di riccioli o ondulazioni. Frangia sulla parte superiore degli orecchi lunga e serica; sul dietro degli arti anteriori e posteriori lungo e fine; buona abbondanza di pelo sul ventre, formando frangia che può estendersi fino al petto e gola. Gli spazi interdigitali sono ben forniti di pelo. La coda ha una frangia di pelo moderatamente lungo, che diminuisce in lunghezza a mano a mano che si avvicina alla punta. Tutte le frange sono diritte e piatte.

 

COLORE: ricco castano dorato senza traccia di nero; non sono da squalificare il bianco sul petto, gola e dita; o piccola stella sulla fronte o stretta striscia sul naso o faccia.

 

TAGLIA:

Altezza al garrese:  Maschi da 58 a 67 cm
                              Femmine da 55 a 62 cm

 
DIFETTI:  qualsiasi deviazione da quanto sopra deve essere considerato come difetto, la severità con cui verrà penalizzata deve essere proporzionata alla gravità e agli effetti che essa determina sulla salute e benessere del cane.

Qualsiasi cane che mostri chiaramente anomalie fisiche o comportamentali deve essere squalificato.

 

N.B. I maschi devono avere due testicoli apparentemente normali, completamente discesi nello scroto.

In merito alla taglia, ricordiamo quanto espresso dal Presidente dell'Irish Red Setter Club Raymond O'Dwyer:"I migliori soggetti da lavoro sono generalmente di media taglia, i maschi mediamente circa 60 cm al garrese e le femmine nella regione dei 55 cm. Eccezionalmente accade che i migliori siano particolarmente grandi, infatti una grande taglia del corpo ostacolerebbe l'efficienza del cane da lavoro" (tratto dal libro "The Irish Red Setter, Atrium Cork University Press). BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: The Irish Red Setter was developed in Ireland as a working dog for hunting game. The breed is derived from the Irish Red and White Setter and an unknown solid red coloured dog. It was a clearly identifiable type in the 18th century. The Irish Red Setter Club was established in 1882 to promote the Breed.  The club issued the Breed Standard in 1886, and has organised field trials and shows to set the Standard for the Breed since that time. In 1998 the club published the working style for the breed.  The standard and working style together describes the physical form and working ability of the breed.

 

The Irish Red Setter has evolved down the years into a hardy, healthy, intelligent dog, possessed of excellent working ability and great stamina.
 
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Racy and athletic full of quality, kindly in expression. Balanced and in proportion.
 
BEHAVIOUR/TEMPERAMENT: Keen, intelligent, energetic, affectionate and loyal.
 
HEAD: Long and lean, and not coarse at the ears. Muzzle and skull of equal length and on parallel lines.
 
CRANIAL REGION:
Skull: Oval (from ear to ear), having plenty of brain room, and with well defined occipital protuberance.  Brows raised.
Stop: Well defined.
 
FACIAL REGION:

 

Nose: The colour of the nose is dark mahogany, or dark walnut or black, the  nostrils wide.
Muzzle:  Moderately deep and fairly square at the end. From the stop to point of nose, long, flews not pendulous.
Jaws: Jaws of nearly equal length. 

Teeth: Scissors bite.

Eyes: Dark hazel or dark brown ought not to be too large.
Ears: Of moderate size, fine in texture, set low and well back, hanging in a neat fold close to head.
 
NECK: Moderately long, very muscular, not too thick, slightly arched, no tendency to throatiness.
 
BODY:  Proportionate to size of dog.
Chest: Deep chest, rather narrow in front, ribs well sprung, leaving plenty of lung room.
Loins: Muscular and slightly arched.
 
TAIL: Moderate length, proportionate to size of body, set on rather low, strong at root, tapering to fine point.  Carried level with or below back.
 
LIMBS
 
FOREQUARTERS:

 

Shoulders: Fine at the point, deep and sloping well back.
Elbows: Free and well let down, not turned in or out.
Forelegs:  Straight and sinewy, well boned.
 
HINDQUARTERS: Wide and powerful.
Hindlegs: Long and muscular from hip to hock; from hock to heel short and strong.
Stifle: Well bent
Hocks: turned neither in or out.
 
FEET:  Small, very firm, toes strong, arched and close together.
 
GAIT/MOVEMENT: Free flowing, driving movement; head held high. Forelegs reaching well ahead but carried low.  Hindquarters drive smoothly with great power.  Crossing or weaving of legs unacceptable.
 
COAT
 
HAIR: On head, front of legs, and tips of ears, short and fine; on other parts of body and legs moderate length, flat and as free as possible from curl or wave.  Feather on upper portion of ears long and silky; on back of fore and hind legs long and fine; fair amount of hair on belly, forming fringe which may extend onto chest and throat.  Feet well feathered between toes.  Tail having fringe of moderately long hair, decreasing in length as it approaches the point. All feathering straight and flat.

 

COLOUR: Rich chestnut with no trace of black; white on chest, throat, and toes; or small star on forehead or narrow streak or blaze on nose or face not to disqualify.
 
SIZE:
Height at withers: Males   23 ins (58 cm) to 26.5 ins (67 cm).
                           Female 21.5 ins (55 cm) to 24.5 ins (62 cm).
 
FAULTS: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness of the fault should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog.
Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.
 
 

NOTE: Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
